The Litchfield County incident occurred on Saturday, June 15 in the town of Litchfield, according to Connecticut State Police.
At approximately 2:20 a.m., police allegedly observed 40-year-old New Haven County resident Darnell Tomlin, of Waterbury, erratically driving his white Kia Optima.
He was heading north on southbound Route 8 near the Exit 41 off-ramp.
Responding officers temporarily shut down a section of the highway while Tomlin was brought to a stop.
When Tomlin was reportedly found to be impaired with alcoholic beverages littered on the car floor.
An investigation reportedly found that Tomlin’s car also had explosive materials or fireworks, a facsimile firearm, suspected narcotics, narcotics packaging materials, and drug paraphernalia inside.
Following a sobriety test (which police said Tomlin failed), the man was arrested and charged with the following:
- Operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
- Driving the wrong way on a divided highway;
- Use of drug paraphernalia;
- Sale of a narcotic substance;
- Possession of a controlled substance;
- Illegal possession of explosives;
- Illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle;
- Criminal possession of a firearm or ammunition; and
- Reckless endangerment.
He was released on a $50,000 bond and is due to be arraigned at Torrington Court on Friday, June 28.
